Facebook makes case for social TV guides

Twitter isn’t the only social platform that loves TV — Facebook, too, is courting television programmers, marketers and distributors to embrace social TV. Facebook’s Andy Mitchell told a crowd at the TV marketing conference PromaxBDA today that social program guides are a growing opportunity.

“If you look at the program guide [now], you’re trying to figure out what to watch among five hundred channels. It’s really hard,” Mitchell said. “But think about a program guide where you see what your friends are watching, that changes the experience.”

As we wrote last week, the social program guide is a billion-dollar opportunity in social TV. Facebook says its users have “liked” TV shows 1.65 billion times, becoming a natural recommendation engine for TV. Comcast has even built the like button into its new cable experience, so viewers can “like” a show straight from their remote controls.

Beyond the “like,” Facebook also offers the ability to schedule and check into events, which could have interesting implications for a social TV guide (as we highlighted in this story). Speaking earlier this year, Facebook’s Christian Hernandez Gallardo says they’ve spoken with broadcasters about the idea of “putting their full EPG (electronic programming guide) as events on Facebook and the ability to RSVP and check-in to all of them.”

While today’s presentation at ProxasBDA didn’t break any news, it illustrates that Facebook is serious about social TV. “Where we wanna go with television is creating a social experience,” Gallardo said last month. “The thing I’m dying to make social is the EPG.”

Futuristic Coke Bottle Design - Mystic

Here's an interesting look at French designer, Jerome Olivet's visionary take on the Coke bottle. The designs are stunningly beautiful, but completely wrong for this brand in my opinion.

Coke is a piece of Americana - a tradition steeped in classic, simple design.

I could, however, see Jerome's design positioned as a limited addition offering at a hotel in Dubai or served on the Virgin Galactic Spaceport.

Here's another cool Skittles mob piece from the UK.

In a live interactive competition, a character named David Phoenix challenges Skittles fans to a duel of epic consequence - or at least delicious consequence. Phoenix wants Facebook fans to try to bury him in a tomb of Skittles. Every person who logs on to the app activates hundreds of Skittles which are dropped on Phoenix every 15 minutes.

After being buried in almost 2 million Skittles with time to spare, the mob won.

Digital Mapping - Prague Clock Tower

The Conan Blimp

To promote his new show on TBS, Conan is sending a blimp up and down the East Coast for the month of October. You can follow it on Twitter or Foursquare for check-ins above his favorite spots. This past weekend I went to St Louis with my wife and kids to visit my brother's family.

The first day, they took us to the City Museum. It's described as "an eclectic mixture of children's playground, funhouse, surrealistic pavilion, and architectural marvel made out of unique, found objects." This description, although accurate, does the place no justice. It was the first time in my life that I've experienced a "you have to see it to believe it" moment.

The museum was imagined and built by internationally acclaimed sculptor Bob Cassilly and his crew of 20 artisans. Among the millions of items they used are salvaged bridges, construction cranes, miles of tile and wire, two abandoned planes and even a school bus that hangs over the roof's edge.

Everywhere you turn within the 600,000 square-foot former show factory, there are places to hide, things to climb and amazing slides - including a 10-story slide that goes from the roof to the second floor caves.

Experiencing such creative vision and execution has really reinvigorated me. It's also made me realize that I need to continue to push myself creativity and those working at RTH.

I Ain't Getting In No Silo, Hannibal

I been thinking and reading a lot lately about the reinvention of the agency structure. I've worked at big shops in NYC and small shops in RIC, and what's interesting (and frustrating) is they both suffer from the same problems that prevent true collaborative development.

So, I made a quick list of things that we do at RTH to try to stay a free-range shop.

1. Stop referring to writers and art directors as "creatives." Everyone should be.
2. Don't tolerate egos - they are cancers to the process
3. Kick off projects with ALL members of the team present - not just planners and account peeps
4. Write an internal brief together
5. Set up a blog or wiki where briefs, research, articles, inspiration and ideas can live and be shared
6. Protect each person's core value to the team, but challenge everyone to contribute to all aspects of the project by making everyone responsible for success
7. Don't work the teams to death
8. Promote and reward all idea sharing from everyone on the team - no idea is stupid (within reason)
9. Drink and bullshit together

In an app-crazed world, there's a lot of "ho hum" ideas being produced.

It seems that if an app doesn't offer some sort of utility/value and fit into a bigger campaign idea, it's really just a PR gimmick. No need to dredge up the culprits. I'm all about being positive these days - or so I tell my wife.

With that said, I love the Old Navy "Booty Reader" online app from CP+B. First, the fortune teller reads your butt by using your web cam or uploaded pictures. It's always fun to see your ass on the screen. Humbling to say the least.

After she sizes you up from a few angles, she asks you to choose 3 cards from a deck that subtly define your different activity levels and lifestyle. Then, voila, she magically provides you with the perfect pair of jeans.

I'm a hot sauce snob. I admit it. I love the stuff and am always seeking out the latest and hottest. Out of the hundreds I've tried, I've never seen one packaged as beautifully as Fuego Hot Sauce.

The line of sauces was designed by University of Washington student, Stephanie Hughes. I love the raw, natural materials and the showcase of the sauce in the small elixir-style bottle. There's always something so gravitating about the use of wood and cork. The numbered heat scale labeling system is a great touch too.

The name of the line, Fuego Hot Sauce," is a little obvious, but all of the other details more than make up for it.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of hanging out with Aki Spicer, director of digital strategy at Fallon. He's in Richmond speaking with students at the Brandcenter.

It was great to have a little human interaction (and drinks) with someone I've "followed socially" for a few years. I have a lot of respect for Aki because he represents the front line of planners (thinkers) trying to explain and integrate a new social behavior into a traditional advertising mindset. And he does a really good job of educating without "bringing the geek" to hard.

Here's a nice presentation on Fallon's observations from this year's SXSW.

Celebrated writer and thought leader Malcolm Gladwell is relatively – and deliberately – absent from the social media landscape. His blog posts are biannual, his Facebook page is void of content and his Tweets are few and far between. The Globe and Mail spoke with Gladwell during his recent trip to Vancouver to gauge his perspective on social media, and to understand why he hasn’t capitalized on it to promote his work.

While Gladwell’s overall assessment is that the balance of social media’s innovation is a net good, he also believes it bears some deficiencies;

The ease with which you can organize people means you no longer have to go to the trouble of things like building strong grassroots organizations, developing a coherent message, forming strong and lasting ties with individuals.

Gladwell also doesn’t believe that social media equates with emotional connection or engagement, instead relying on other platforms to communicate his thinking and work over the long-term;

If you follow me on Twitter, I do not own your heart. I may own your pocketbook momentarily. And I may own your attention for five seconds, but that’s it.

Arguably, his most interesting perspective is around the ubiquitous question of identifying social media’s tipping point, and long-term viability;

The problem is, we’re still in the experimental phase. The thing about Facebook is, it’s insanely new. This world of the Internet, if we know anything from its brief history, it likes nothing more than to build someone up only to topple them. Who has an AOL account these days? Not that long ago, AOL was the single most powerful player on the Internet. Who has a MySpace account these days? MySpace sold for billions of dollars not that long ago. I’m very reluctant to crown Facebook king of the future. They certainly are flavour of the month. This is not a world that respects loyalties and longevity.

While most of us may take a less accusatory perspective on social media and its benevolent or malevolent desires, Gladwell doesn’t prognosticate on social media’s future, or on the longevity of today’s key players. The rapid pace of change and relative unpredictability of when consumers’ rapt attention will become boredom is an ongoing challenge for social media players to continually understand their users, lifestyles and consumption habits – and to adapt to keep them engaged.

Star Trek has been an ongoing phenomenon since its debut in 1966. Star Trek consists of 2 series on the USS Enterprise, 3 spin offs, an animated series, and 11 feature films. A franchise this long lasting and successful creates a loyal following that is interested in anything related to the series. Whether it’s Star Trek clothing, home decor, or tattoos, there are a plethora of awesome examples of the fierceness of Star Trek fans. From the fantastic to the ridiculous, here are 10 of the most interesting expressions of Star Trek fanaticism:

Star Trek fans explore every means of showing off their passion for the Star Trek universe, and this includes tattoos. A lot of fans pay homage to their favorite characters (or the entire cast) by having portraits placed prominently on themselves, though the more subtle Star Trek fan may simply have a communicator tattooed to their chest.

Even with the advanced technology in Star Trek, exploring the boundaries of space is a dangerous business, and there have been a lot of deaths throughout the series. The funeral rites in the Federation are beautiful and explored in detail. As with all things Star Trek, industrious companies have even learned to capitalize on funeral gear. Futuristic looking urns are available, as well as coffins that look identical to those in the series and films.

Everything about the USS Enterprise is graceful and epic, as it is the flagship of the Federation’s fleet, and the pinnacle of human technological achievement. The Star Trek films deserve a fitting viewing space, preferably Star Trek themed. The most common Star Trek home theater design is the bridghe, with its signature sweeping railing and the Captain’s chair.

Star Trek commercialization has often gotten out of hand. Star Trek themed sporks, nutcrackers, Russian dolls, and even Eggo waffles seem to cross some line, though they’re pretty humorous now. While Star Trek fans are willing to spend their hard earned money on almost anything Star Trek themed, their are limits (we just haven’t found them yet).

Thursday=Nerdsday - Real Foursquare Merit Badges

I have a love/hate relationship with Foursquare. Actually "love" may be an overstatement. It's more like intrigue. I do get sucked into the routine of checking in, but the competitive part of service doesn't interest me. Seriously, if you get fired up by trying to check in at more places/more times than your friends, you need a sport.

Honestly, I'm not really sure why I use Foursquare. I'm not at all interested in where my "friends" are and am sure they don't care where I am. Let's chalk it up to "see where it's going."

Anyway, a company called Nerd Merit Badges is planning on making the dreams of socially needy nerds come true. Soon backpacks and jean jackets from Washington Square Park to Venice Beach will be littered with Foursquare badges. You can also get their Laptop Sash if that's more your style.

The badges aren't available yet, but you can follow @nerdmeritbadges on Twitter for updates. Stay strong.

Snickers Satisfied at the Super Bowl

Awesome game. Lame spots.

My wife and friends got incredibly tired of me saying, "What the hell was that?" at the end of most every commercial. There were a few highlights.

A few thoughts:

1. The Doritos crowdsourcing concept worked, as the "bark collar"
spot rated 2nd on the USA Today Ad Meter. Was it only funny because
the other ads sucked? Too easy for my taste.

2. The Snickers spot was an incredible rebound after getting
bashed a few years ago for the "mechanics making out" spot. Who
doesn't love Betty White?

3. Sex still sells with Megan Fox, Beyonce and Danica Patrick. And it's still
really boring, easy and creatively sad.

4. I wanted to like the Coca-Cola/Simpsons spot but was totally let down at
the end. What happened, again?

5. Budweiser needs to retire the Clydesdale spots. The warm and fuzzies
have worn off.

6. Loved the simplicity and clear utility of Google's "Parisian Love Ad." Who
knew typing on TV could be so romantic?

7. The movie trailers were awesome for the most part. Can't wait to see
Alice in Wonderland, Robin Hood and Wolfman.

The new Star Wars influenced line of sneakers from Adidas has me confused. On one hand, I appreciate the subtle design cues that connect each shoe to its Star Wars element/character. On the other, I wonder if the designs go far enough - so that you "get it" at first glance? If you forget for a second that they're based on Star Wars, are you just left with an ugly pair of shoes? Some remind me of British Knights of the 80's.

We spotted this cool graffiti wall in an alley beside a medical marijuana store called "Killer Kush" - down the street from the Venice Beach outdoor gym. I doubt even the "Killer Kush" wouldn't have made me feel better after seeing 12 dudes wearing sparkly bikini bottoms pump iron.

I love the line "Goodness is the only investment that never fails." Nice urban inspiration.

Q. What are some of the most important leadership lessons you’ve learned?
A. After college, a roommate and I started a company called LinkExchange in 1996, and it grew to about 100 or so people, and then we ended up selling the company to Microsoft in 1998. From the outside, it looked like it was a great acquisition, $265 million, but most people don’t know the real reason why we ended up selling the company.
It was because the company culture just went completely downhill. When it was starting out, when it was just 5 or 10 of us, it was like your typical dot-com. We were all really excited, working around the clock, sleeping under our desks, had no idea what day of the week it was. But we didn’t know any better and didn’t pay attention to company culture.
By the time we got to 100 people, even though we hired people with the right skill sets and experiences, I just dreaded getting out of bed in the morning and was hitting that snooze button over and over again.
Q. Why?
A. I just didn’t look forward to going to the office. The passion and excitement were no longer there. That’s kind of a weird feeling for me because this was a company I co-founded, and if I was feeling that way, how must the other employees feel? That’s actually why we ended up selling the company.
Financially, it meant I didn’t have to work again if I didn’t want to. So that was the lens through which I was looking at things. It’s basically asking the question, what would you want to do if you won the lottery? For me, I didn’t want to be part of a company where I dreaded going into the office.
So when I joined Zappos about a year later, I wanted to make sure that I didn’t make the same mistake that I had made at LinkExchange, in terms of the company culture going downhill. So for us, at Zappos, we really view culture as our No. 1 priority. We decided that if we get the culture right, most of the stuff, like building a brand around delivering the very best customer service, will just take care of itself.
Q. So how do you do that?
A. About five years ago, we formalized the definition of our culture into 10 core values. We wanted to come up with committable core values, meaning that we would actually be willing to hire and fire people based on those values, regardless of their individual job performance. Given that criteria, it’s actually pretty tough to come up with core values.
Q. Tell me what happened.
A. We spent a year doing that. I basically sent an e-mail out to the entire company, asking them what our values should be, and got a whole bunch of different responses. The initial list was actually 37 long, and then we ended up condensing and combining them and went back and forth and came up with our list of 10.
Today, we actually do two separate sets of interviews. The hiring manager and his or her team will interview for the standard fit within the team, relevant experience, technical ability and so on. But then our H.R. department does a separate set of interviews purely for culture fit. They actually have questions for each and every one of the core values.
Q. Can you give me an example of the value and the question?
A. Well, some of them are behavioral questions. One of our values is, “Create fun and a little weirdness.” So one of our interview questions is, literally, on a scale of 1 to 10, how weird are you? If you’re a 1, you’re probably a little bit too strait-laced for us. If you’re a 10, you might be too psychotic for us.
It’s not so much the number; it’s more seeing how candidates react to a question. Because our whole belief is that everyone is a little weird somehow, so it’s really more just a fun way of saying that we really recognize and celebrate each person’s individuality, and we want their true personalities to shine in the workplace environment, whether it’s with co-workers or when talking with customers.
I think of myself less as a leader, and more of being almost an architect of an environment that enables employees to come up with their own ideas, and where employees can grow the culture and evolve it over time, so it’s not me having a vision of “This is our culture.”

This Macallan Ice Ball Machine is amazing. It uses gravity and copper properties to melt a big chunk of ice into a perfect sphere - which is apparently optimal for drinking.

The Macallan team found the machine in Japan and bought exclusive rights to it for a few years. I'll find out more. But now, off to the bar...

Help the people of Haiti with a simple text! I did. #in

We’ve just confirmed that the Red Cross has already raised more than $800,000 for Haiti through their $10 text message donation initiative (text “Haiti” to 90999), which is backed by the United States State Department.

Susan Watson, director of marketing and visibility for the Red Cross, tells us that they’re getting reports every half hour with the latest donation numbers, and the current total — as of 4:30 p.m. EST — is greater than $800,000 for text message donations alone. Watson says, “The needs are so tremendous in Haiti, and we are honored that people continue to give to the American Red Cross. Raising this amount of money, $10 at time, is a true testament to the American spirit.”
The Red Cross’s involvement in the relief effort is to be commended. Not only did it immediately set up the simplest donation method possible, but its social media presence and outreach, when combined with the State Department’s involvement, has turned this into a viral funding initiative, topping Twitter trends and inspiring action. The Red Cross is also contributing an initial $1 million from the International Response Fund.
If you want to help the cause you can text “Haiti” to 90999 to send a $10 donation to the Red Cross. There’s also this collection of organizations that are accepting donations online.

The RedLaser App Just Saved Me $40

Sorry for the spammy headline, but it's true.

I was in Target yesterday buying my wife the Flip UltraHD camera for her birthday. As I'm standing in the checkout line, I remembered that I had recently purchased the RedLaser App for my iPhone. RedLaser uses the camera on your phone to scan product barcodes and searches to find the best price using Google product search.

I scanned the box and a price list came up almost instantly. I reviewed it and noticed that Best Buy had the camera on sale for $40 cheaper. I clicked the link for proof and sure enough, it was on sale. I laughed diabolically, returned the camera to electronics department (Lie: I put it on the magazine rack. Sorry.) and headed to Best Buy.

RedLaser cost me $1.99. Easy math. Awesome App.

Drunken Drivers Evade the Cops With Twitter

Twitter has become the ultimate turncoat lately, functioning as a soldier for the police and drunken drivers alike.

We reported last week that inebriated drivers in Texas are to be outed on TwitterTwitter
, and now cops report that the culprits themselves are using the microblogging site to inform others of the location of sobriety checkpoints.

According to a 2001 study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, these checkpoints reduce alcohol-related accidents by an average of 20 percent. So you can imagine what effect a bunch of New Year’s revelers with the inside scoop on checkpoints could have.

It’s common knowledge that holidays such as New Year’s Eve and Thanksgiving present ample opportunities for folks to get smashed, get behind the wheel and get into accidents. That’s why police set up sobriety checkpoints in the first place. Consequently, when folks make use of Twitter, FacebookFacebook
and even iPhoneiPhone
apps to bypass said checkpoints, we could be in for a world of hurt (literally).

Still, according to The Seattle Times, some think that there’s no difference between tweeting about a checkpoint and the police department’s own promotion of the security measure (police basically inform citizens that they will be enforced, but decline to give specific locations).

What do you think of this phenomenon? Do you think it will contribute to more accidents this NYE? If so, it might be safe to pull up a couch and party at home.

Resource Interactive's Off the Wall product allows retailers to sell directly from their Facebook walls.

--> Resource Interactive, an Ohio-based digital agency with offices in Columbus and Cincinnati, this month launched "Off the Wall," a platform that allows consumers to purchase a product directly from a retailer's wall or their own feed on Facebook without leaving the popular social-networking site.
The product was developed by the agency's in-house research and development lab, which keeps the company up to speed on new developments in the digital space, while also coming up with prototypes and concepts for a "digital future."
"We needed a group of people that could take the time and have the focus to look out a little bit ahead," said Dan Shust, director-emerging media, who heads up the 18-month-old group. "We get caught up in project work occurring right now."
As marketers look to reign in costs in a tough economy, agencies have felt the squeeze, so ad shops are looking to new revenue streams from product development that have included everything from clothing to widgets to books.
Mr. Shust said he believes product development will become a bigger piece of what the agency does. He said Resource Interactive has determined it made more sense to begin building its own platforms and products that could be used by both clients and others, rather than building customized solutions from the ground up for each client or project.
Opening its products up to non-clients is proving beneficial for the agency, which is adding new clients as a result and has received some interest from international agencies looking to become the exclusive provider of Off the Wall in other countries.
Off the Wall was created when the agency, which works with major retailers such as Victoria's Secret, Burton, Hewlett-Packard and The Limited, realized the majority of activity in Facebook was taking place on the wall. "We've created engaging opportunities on sub-tabs," Mr. Shust said. "If you drive traffic to those tabs, [consumers] can have a good experience, but a lot of people don't necessary visit those pages."
Just before Christmas, The Limited became the first retailer to use Off the Wall. The retailer is offering its best-selling Infinity scarf -- which appeared on "Oprah" -- for 30% off plus free shipping. Brian Seewald, director of e-commerce at The Limited, said that sales of the scarves were meeting expectations thus far.
"We didn't attach a huge sales expectation to this," he said, though he noted that plans for future offerings using Off the Wall are already in the works. "This is more about doing something special for our fans and doing something to give our brand some visibility."
Mr. Seewald went on to explain that having launched e-commerce in September 2008 and a Facebook page in October 2009, The Limited was quite late to the online and social-media space. "It was time to show our fans that we're still an innovative company and on the edge of things," he said.
Off the Wall takes three to four weeks to implement and is relatively affordable for retailers, given its performance-based compensation model. Upfront costs are minimal, roughly covering the cost of implementation. Because Resource Interactive owns the technology, it can afford to set it up for retailers and wait for the pay off, said Mr. Shust. (Facebook does not receive any financial compensation from the e-commerce conducted through Off the Wall.) According to the company, a brand pays a nominal fee up front, while the agency shares in the revenue on the back end.
"We're pretty sure the investment to develop is going to pay off," Mr. Shust said. "Getting to a working prototype was very quick, and we did it with a few people and a small internal investment. A couple of clients in, we have reaped the benefits of that."

What a great example of agency innovation.

It's also a great example of how retailers are getting smart in utilizing a strategy that provides multiple and transportable "storefronts."

It would be great to see this taken one step further in Facebook where recognition software could be used on wall photos for clothing items. So, when you're randomly looking at a friend's photo and like a shirt or pair of shoes, you could click and buy it instantly. And to get FB users to opt in, retailers could offer discounts - essentially, using them as sales people.
Exciting stuff.

One question though...if this retail channel explodes, how long will it take for Facebook to ask for a percentage of each sale?
